Vice President and General Counsel

            Indiana University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President and General Counsel of the university. The VP and General Counsel serves as the chief legal officer of Indiana University, reports to the President, and serves as a member of the President’s senior management team. The VP and General Counsel represents and directs the representation of Indiana University in all legal matters; serves as legal advisor to the President, the Board of Trustees, and other senior administrators; and serves as a resource on legal matters and issues of institutional procedure and governance.

The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel is based in Bloomington, with a second office in Indianapolis, and serves all IU campuses. The offices of Internal Audit and Affirmative Action also report to the vice president. Candidates should hold aJuris Doctorate degree from a law school approved for accreditation by the American Bar Association, be a member in good standing of the Bar of the supreme court of the state in which he or she practices law, and have the prompt eligibility for such standing in Indiana. Candidates should have a minimum of fifteen years of legal practice experience in a relevant area, having attained a senior position of responsibility in a firm, corporation, government agency, or other organization. Five years as general counsel of a large educational, non-profit, for-profit, or governmental organization, or equivalent role as outside counsel, is preferred.
